“More jewelry than weapons is found in burial places. Jewelry was so much confined to its wearer that people could not think of it being worn my any other person; it was not even bequeathed – a thought unthinkable for our time and age.”
I HAVE BEEN A CERAMIC ARTIST FOR MOST OF MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER. I HAVE BEEN A JEWELRY DESIGNER FOR MOST OF MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER. HOW EXCITING TO HAVE NOW MARRIED BOTH DISCIPLINES INTO A NEW SERIES THAT I CALL “BIJOUX ART.”
AS PART OF A NEW GENERATION OF DESIGNERS WORKING TO COMBINE TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY, AND VINTAGE GEMS WITH NEW MATERIALS, THE POSSIBILITIES FOR CREATIVE ADORNMENT IS WIDE OPEN.
MY PROCESS BEGINS WITH A SIMPLE BALL OF CLAY. NOT ORDINARY CLAY BUT METAL CLAY. BRONZE METAL CLAY TO BE SPECIFIC. REAL BRONZE METAL PARTICLES, SUSPENDED IN AN ORGANIC BINDER, RESULTING IN A CLAY LIKE MATERIAL THAT CAN BE SCULPTED, ROLLED, TEXTURED, FABRICATED, AND SANDED. ONCE THE DESIRED OBJECT IS ACHIEVED IT IS THEN FIRED AND HELD AT A TEMPERATURE OF 1575 DEGREES F. IN A DIGITAL KILN. AND THAT IS WHEN THE LITTLE MIRACLE TAKES PLACE. THE ORGANIC BINDER BURNS OUT AND WHAT IS LEFT IS PURE BRONZE JEWELRY! POLISHED TO RESEMBLE GOLD BUT WITH THE STRENGTH OF BRONZE, I THEN EMBELLISH EACH PIECE WITH THE COLORS AND SPARKLE OF SWAROVSKI CRYSTALS AND GEM STONES.
EACH PIECE UNIQUE BIJOUX ART.
